ELA Annual and Student Conferences 6-10 Oct 2026: Glocal Governance in the Age of Triple Planetary Crises

From global to local (“glocal”) contexts, what law and governance measures are needed as humanity confronts the triple planetary crises of biodiversity loss, climate change, and pollution? And how can government officials, academics, lawyers, communities, and other stakeholders meaningfully contribute to concerted action in response to these crises? In collaboration with the South African Research Chair in Cities, Law and Environmental Sustainability (CLES) at North-West University, Potchefstroom, between 6 and 11 October 2026 , the Environmental Law Association of South Africa (ELA) Annual and Student Conferences will explore these questions from diverse perspectives. You are invited to participate in these Conferences to reflect on the way forward. The Student Conference on 6 and 7 October 2026 is an opportunity for students (postgraduate and undergraduate) to share and seek input on their ongoing or completed reserach of relevance to the topic, while the Annual Conference on 8 and 9 October 2026 invites academics, community members, environmental assessment practitioners, government officials, lawyers, and other stakeholders to present their work on and engage in conversation on glocal governance in an age of triple planetary crises . On 8 October 2026, attendees are invited to join an excursion to the Vredefort Dome, a World Heritage Site where you can bear witness to the earliest and largest meteorite impact on Earth, San rock art, special bird species and stunning landscapes.
