Exhibitions Gallery 9: “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Windows into Heaven──Religious Art Treasures from the State Tretyakov Gallery” (starting from 21 Oct) This exhibition will offer a rare glimpse of the profound legacy of Eastern Orthodox art. Presenting about 100 important icon paintings and gemstone-encrusted treasures of Orthodox Christian art spanning nearly a millennium from the renowned State Tretyakov Gallery in Russia, the exhibition traces the evolution of Eastern Orthodox art. Structured thematically into five sections, the exhibition explores the sacred role of icon paintings in worship and highlights the significance of visual narratives related to Christ, the Virgin Mary, saints, and the Bible in Eastern Orthodox art traditions. Gallery 1: “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: The Forbidden City and the World: Cultural Encounters” The exhibition situates the Forbidden City and Chinese history in a global context and weaves a rich tapestry of China’s interactions—in diplomacy, trade, science, philosophy, and craftwork—with world civilisations. Featuring over 150 exceptional objects from the Palace Museum that were produced in China, Asia, and Europe, the exhibition celebrates China’s artistic achievements. Through exploring the cosmopolitanism of the Forbidden City, the modes of cultural exchange during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, and China’s contribution to world civilisations, the exhibition exemplifies the Hong Kong Palace Museum’s mission to advance the inheritance and innovation of excellent traditional Chinese culture while fostering dialogue between China and the rest of the world. The exhibition is jointly organised by the HKPM and the Palace Museum. Gallery 3: “Brilliance: Ming Dynasty Ceramic Treasures from the Palace Museum, 1368–1644” The Chinese ceramics housed in the Palace Museum—unparalleled in volume, quality, and variety—are mainly inherited from the imperial collections of the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties. This exhibition features Ming ceramic treasures from the collection of the Palace Museum and explores the development and the outstanding achievements of ceramic production in form, glaze, and design in the early, mid-, and late Ming dynasty. Gallery 4: “Heavenly Horses: Masterpieces from the Palace Museum” Celebrating the arrival of the Year of the Horse in 2026, the “Heavenly Horses” exhibition displays nearly 100 horse-themed paintings by more than 60 renowned artists from the Yuan dynasty up to the 20th century, considering imperial and literati practices, the relationship between tradition and modernity, and the dialogue between Chinese and Western painting styles. Gallery 5: Contemporary Design in Dialogue with Palace Display (starting from 30 Sep) “Contemporary Design in Dialogue with Palace Display” is jointly organised by the HKPM and the Palace Museum. Centring on the imperial workshops of the Qing dynasty that specialised in the production and repair of objects and furnishings for the court, the exhibition features approximately 200 treasures, revealing the essential functions of the imperial workshops: the design, production, management, and display of court art. Hong Kong designers and artists will participate in the design and curation of the exhibition, connecting traditional and contemporary design with a new approach. Gallery 6: “Joyful Encounters: The Connoisseurship and Art of Wong Kwan Shut” A preeminent connoisseur and scholar-artist based in Hong Kong, Mr Wong had built an extensive and significant collection through a lifelong engagement with great works of successive dynasties. He possessed particularly profound knowledge of the principles, techniques, and aesthetics underlying paintings and calligraphic works from the Wei and Jin to the Ming dynasties (3rd–17th century). This expertise enabled him as an artist to cultivate a personal style steeped in classical traditions yet distinguished by a lyrical, poetic quality all his own. Mr Wong stood out as a true modern heir to China’s time-honoured literati tradition. Gallery 7: “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: A Day in the City — An Experimental Study of Things Across Time” Bringing together nine established and emerging Hong Kong artists across diverse disciplines, “A Day in the City” creates a remarkable space for dialogue between the majestic grandeur of the Forbidden City and the vibrancy of contemporary Hong Kong. Bridging Chinese heritage and contemporary art, the exhibition invites visitors on a journey across time to discover how historical wisdom and traditions continue to resonate in modern life. Through experimental artistic expression, it reimagines cultural heritage for the contemporary city with renewed vitality. © Hong Kong Palace Museum Notice to Ticket-Buyers This ticket is valid for single entry to Gallery 9 and cannot be reused.
