AVEDON

From world leaders to pop culture icons and international supermodels, Richard Avedon's influence helped create the blueprint for our image-driven world. His photographs didn't just reflect culture, they shaped it. Directed by Academy Award winner Ron Howard, Avedon traces the life and legacy of an artist who used photography to reinvent the world. His trademark stark-white backdrop and searing portraits rewrote the visual grammar of fashion and celebrity. Drawing on unprecedented access to his personal archives—never-before-seen stills, behind-the-lens footage, and interviews with his closest collaborators—the film explores how his singular eye reshaped the culture around him. Avedon lived and worked through the century's most pivotal moments: postwar rebuilding, 1950s Hollywood glitz, the civil rights movement, the rise of youth culture and activism in the 60s and 70s, and the unbridled consumerism that followed. For over 60 years, he used his camera to gain access to people and places where interesting things were happening—never simply as a witness. His images didn't just capture the upheavals of his time; they helped shape how the world understood them.
