Its roots are said to lie in the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of Brahmanism and Hinduism, dating back over two thousand years. While it is a form of Hindu religious music grounded in the two distinct concepts of *Raga* (melodic framework) and *Tala* (rhythmic structure), it is also appreciated as art music, characterized by sophisticated theory and technical mastery. It was refined into a stage art form in the early 19th century—while retaining elements of prayer, hymns, and mythological storytelling— and has since spread across the globe. From a young age, they received exceptional training in Karnataka music from their father, a Mridangam player. They captivate audiences with their passionate and heartfelt singing, full of faith and emotion, and their harmonious combination that only real brothers can provide. Developing the existing style of vocal duos singing in unison, they weave melodies by exchanging phrases with each other, establishing a unique style that incorporates "harmony," which is not originally found in Indian classical music, in a way that is different from Western music. At the moment when their two voices resonate and harmonize, an exquisite world of sound emerges. They have performed many times overseas in Europe, the Americas, and Southeast Asia, and have appeared at music festivals such as the Tyagaraja Aladana (Cleveland) in the United States and the Sydney Music Festival. They also held a concert in Nairobi, Kenya, to a sold-out audience. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the "Namami Gange" national project to purify the Ganges River, and he composed the official theme song, "Namami Gange." After moving to the United States at nine, he studied under the renowned ghatam player Subash Chandran—celebrated as the "Wizard of Konnakol." Although he earned a Master’s degree in Engineering from Cooper Union in New York after college, his passion for the mridangam remained undiminished, leading him to relocate to Chennai, India, in 2012 to pursue a career as a professional Carnatic mridangam artist. Beyond performing with leading musicians in the field, he is active in fusion groups that transcend the boundaries of classical music, such as "Carnatic 2.0 Reloaded" and "The Thayir Sadam Project." He performed the mridangam on several tracks—including "Weapons of Love"—for the 2019 feature film *His Father's Voice*. In 2025, he performed at "Burning Man," the outdoor event held in the Nevada desert, bringing the sounds of the mridangam and South Indian rhythms to one of the world's most avant-garde stages. He is an up-and-coming musician who combines diverse interests with exceptional musical talent; his activities range from applying his engineering expertise to improve the mridangam itself to actively promoting the instrument and South Indian rhythmic traditions. <参考動画＞ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCzRwGDzvZU スニル・クマール Sunil Kumar （カンジーラ） 幼少の頃から、儀礼にて演奏されるタヴィルという太鼓の奏者である父シェーカラの指導の下、 カルナータカ音楽のリズムの基礎とタヴィルの演奏方法を学び始める。 その後、カンジーラのV.セルヴァガネーシュにカンジーラを学び、素焼きの壺太鼓ガタムの 巨匠ヴィックゥ・ヴィナーヤクラームにコナッコルを学ぶ。タミル・ナードゥ州立音楽大学の ソロ演奏コンクールで一位を受賞するなど頭角を現わし、オール・インディア・ラジオのAグレード・アーティストにも認定される。 2011年、ムンバイで開催された伝説的タブラ奏者ザキール・フセイン主催の音楽祭に師セルヴァガネーシュと共に出演。 2016年にはカルナータカ音楽の楽聖ティヤーガラージャの名を冠した音楽祭に出演、その演奏の様子がインド全土に放送される。 現在でもカンジーラ、タヴィルなど複数のパーカッションを演奏しマルチな才能を発揮する若手の有望株。 From a young age, he began learning the fundamentals of Carnatic music rhythms and how to play the tavil, a drum played in rituals, under the guidance of his father, Shekala. Later, he studied the kanjira with V. Selvaganesh and the konakkor with Vikku Vinayakram, a master of the ghatam, a clay pot drum. He rose to prominence, winning first prize in a solo performance competition at the Tamil Nadu State College of Music, and was recognized as an A-grade artist by All India Radio. He was selected. In 2011, he performed with his teacher Selvaganesh at a music festival in Mumbai hosted by the legendary tabla player Zakir Hussain. In 2016, he performed at a music festival named after Tyagaraja, the great composer of Carnatic music, and his performance was broadcast throughout India. Bharatanatyam dancers active in Western Japan came together and have since expanded their activities as a team, including performing on stage at the India Pavilion of the Kansai Expo. Each dancer studied in Chennai and is now active in training younger generations and performing in Japan. South India abounds with traditions and customs—collectively known as Tamil culture—that have thrived in the streets and the lives of the people since ancient times. These traditions enrich daily life, nourishing the spirit and possessing a vitality that is passed down to the next generation. My love for Tamil culture stems from the sense of nostalgia and comfort I feel whenever I encounter such scenes. These experiences serve as a reminder of something precious—something that was likely once a natural part of life in Japan as well. Akira Io, representative of Machikado Club, has been visiting South India for over two decades and has built deep friendships with its classical music artists. He was captivated and inspired by the electric atmosphere of the festival—where artists perform continuously from morning till night across various venues, surrounded by enthusiastic audiences and the people who support the event. Driven by a desire to recreate this experience in Japan, he launched "Margazhi Japan" in 2023, inviting top-tier South Indian classical artists to perform. Through events held in 2023, 2024, 2025, and now 2026, he has been successfully spreading South Indian classical music in Japan and steadily growing its fan base.
