Simple at first glance — until you look closer. A rare grain in a plank. A joint you cannot see. A knot left in on purpose. For centuries, the finest work in Japan was made to hide its quality, not display it. Half a day in a forest that has produced timber for six hundred years without ever being replanted, and in the workshop of a sukiya carpenter — the traditional architecture of tea houses — who still builds with it. You'll hear why they build this way, see a replica of Japan's most famous tea room, and go home with a different eye. GROW. BUILD. This forest did not grow here. It was made — by people who learned to copy a perfect tree, then to harvest it without ever killing it. Possibly the world's first cloning technology, invented so Kyoto's tea houses could be built from flawless timber, forever. Hear why a tree that is never felled keeps giving, and how a craftsman regards the tree he is about to use. 樹齢600年の母なる木の下に立ちます。しめ縄が張られ、伐る前に感謝が捧げられている木です。 この森は自然に生えたものではありません。まっすぐな一本の木を複製し、さらにその木を殺さずに伐り続ける方法まで編み出した人たちがつくりました。世界初のクローン技術かもしれません。京都の茶室を、同じ完璧な木で建て続けるために。 なぜ伐り倒さない木が与え続けられるのか。これから使う木に、職人はどんな眼差しを向けているのか。 〜 BUILD｜The workshop of a tea house carpenter 削る｜数寄屋大工の工房で 〜 Sukiya is the architecture of the tea house — the purest form Japanese beauty has ever taken, and the one that hides itself best. No gold, no grandeur. The finest work here is placed where only a trained eye will ever find it. Sukiya is built to be taken apart, mended, and one day returned to the earth — no glue, no nails, no waste. Step into a working sukiya carpenter's workshop and learn how he reads a piece of timber, answers a client's impossible request, and decides that a knot belongs exactly where it is. Japanese planes cut on the pull, not the push. Watch, and try it yourself if there's time. わびさびを、建てる。 数奇屋（すきや）とは、茶室の建築。日本の美意識がもっとも純粋に表れ、そしてもっとも巧妙に隠された様式です。金も豪華さもない。最上の趣向は、わかる人にしか気づかれない場所に置かれます。 数奇屋は、ばらして直せるように建てられます。接着剤も釘も使わず、いつか土に還るように。 現役の数奇屋大工の工房へ。木をどう読み、施主の無理難題にどう応え、なぜその節を残すと決めたのか。その仕事の中身を聞きます。 欧米と違い、押すのではなく引いて削る日本の鉋を間近で見て、時間があればご自身でも。 〜 ARRIVE｜A masterpiece in 3.6 square metres 到達｜二畳の傑作 〜 Inside the workshop stands a full-scale copy of Tai-an, the tea room designated a National Treasure. Two tatami mats. Everything removable has been removed; everything left was chosen — the light, the change in floor height, the grain of a single post. No nails, no glue, and yet it rides out earthquakes: the posts simply rest on stone and move with the ground rather than fight it. Sit in it, and see how much you can now notice.
