第39回東京国際映画祭 交流ラウンジ ***** 39th Tokyo International Film Festival : Women's Empowerment Section Women's Empowerment Talk “HER GAZE” — Yu Jing-pin + Ashizawa Akiko Last year, the Tokyo International Film Festival’s Women’s Empowerment section launched “HER GAZE,” a talk series exploring the creative processes and philosophies of women filmmakers. The inaugural guest was director Chloé Zhao. This year, the series turns its focus to women behind the camera, welcoming Taiwanese Director of Photography Yu Jing-pin to Tokyo. Presented by: The 39th Tokyo International Film Festival Co-presented by: Tokyo Metropolitan Government Program — Opening remarks and introduction to the gender gap in Japan and Taiwan — Talk with Yu Jing-pin, moderated by Kondo Kanako — Conversation between Yu Jing-pin and Ashizawa Akiko — Q&A (questions may be submitted in advance) ◾️The Aim of the Talk Cinematographers work behind the camera while shaping what audiences see on screen. They play a crucial role in creating a film’s visual language, framing, and overall look. In Japan, cinematography has historically been a particularly difficult field for women to enter. While more than 100 living women directors have worked on commercial feature films, fewer than 50 women cinematographers are estimated to have worked on theatrical feature films, based on research conducted in 2024 by project organizer Kondo Kanako. Following our focus on women directors in 2024 and 2025, this year we turn our attention to women working behind the camera. The project also builds on last year’s roundtable discussion "The Power of Women's film Festival". Yu Jing-pin has built an international career in Taiwan, while Ashizawa Akiko has been a pioneer for women cinematographers in Japan. Their dialogue will explore the experiences of women working in the film industries of Taiwan and Japan, highlighting both their differences and common ground. ◾️Speakers GUEST: Yu Jing-pin After studying art, Yu Jing-pin became interested in photography and cinematography through her work in the darkroom. She began her career in fashion photography, music videos, and advertising, working with artists including Faye Wong and Mayday. Since the 2000s, she has worked extensively on feature films with directors including Chen Hung-i, Tom Lin, and Derek Tsang. In 2020, she became the first woman to win Best Cinematography at the Hong Kong Film Awards for Better Days . In 2023, she became the first woman to win Best Cinematography in the history of the Golden Horse Awards for Fish Memories. In 2026, she received Best Cinematography at the Taipei Film Festival for Shu Qi’s Girl. HOST: Ashizawa Akiko A pioneer of women cinematographers in Japan, Ashizawa Akiko forged her career in Japan’s traditionally male-dominated film industry. She has worked with leading Japanese directors including Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Koji Fukada, and Shuichi Okita, and has received numerous honors, including the Japan Academy Film Prize, the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Art Encouragement Prize, and the Medal with Purple Ribbon. In recent years, she has also worked internationally and participated in events including the Berlin International Film Festival and the Indian Women’s Film Festival. In 2026, she became the second woman to receive the Angénieux Tribute Award at the Cannes Film Festival.
