The Hayward Hawaiian Music Series closes its second season with the fourth and final concert of the year—an extraordinary May Day celebration featuring three of Hawaiian music’s most acclaimed acts: Mark Yamanaka, Hōkū Zuttermeister and Kūpaoa. This special May 1 finale brings together an incredible collection of award-winning voices, musicianship and Hawaiian tradition for one unforgettable evening in Hayward. Mark Yamanaka has become one of the most recognizable voices in contemporary Hawaiian music. The Hilo musician is a 14-time Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner, celebrated for his soaring Hawaiian falsetto and remarkable versatility. His acclaimed recordings Lei Pua Kenikeni, Lei Maile and Lei Lehua have earned some of Hawaiʻi music’s highest honors, including Album, Song and Male Vocalist of the Year. Hōkū Zuttermeister brings a voice deeply rooted in Hawaiian music and hula traditions. His acclaimed debut recording, ʻĀina Kūpuna, was a sensation at the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, earning six awards, including Hawaiian Album of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, Entertainer of the Year and Hawaiian Language Performance. His rich vocals, beautiful falsetto and deep respect for the music of his kūpuna have made him one of Hawaiian music’s distinctive voices. Completing this remarkable lineup is Kūpaoa, the award-winning husband-and-wife duo of Kellen and Līhau Paik. Since 2005, they have earned multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards while becoming known for their harmonies, Hawaiian-language music and thoughtful perpetuation of mele. Their honors include Most Promising Artist, Island Music Album of the Year, Hawaiian Language Performance and Christmas Album of the Year. There is also a wonderful connection among these artists: Mark and Kūpaoa collaborated on the holiday recording A Gift of the Heart, which earned the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award for Christmas Album of the Year. Together, Mark Yamanaka, Hōkū Zuttermeister and Kūpaoa bring an extraordinary evening of soaring vocals, beautiful harmonies, traditional and contemporary Hawaiian mele, stories and aloha—the perfect way to celebrate May Day and close another season of Hawaiian music in Hayward.
