Paul McMillan, violincello da Spalla & viola The Violincello da Spalla is most likely the 5 stringed instrument for which J. S. Bach wrote the Solo Suite VI in D Major S.1012. A small size cello with an addition of a top E string to its range. Technically, Paul McMillan has found it comfortable to hold and play like a viola and thus is excited to present the Sixth Suite for the first time in Australia as was possibly originally intended. Max Reger’s second solo suite from Opus131d, also in D Major brings us back to familiar viola territory and a wonderful piece. Th Opus 11 Nr 5 is the first of Hindemith’s 4 solo viola sonatas. The epic fourth movement “In Form und Zeitmass einer Passacaglia” reminiscent of Bach’s Chaconne from the D minor Partita. PROGRAM J. S.
