Lobo: Missa Beata Dei genetrix Maria a6 Guerrero: Beata Dei genetrix Maria, Ave Virgo sanctissima, Maria Magdelene, Regina Caeli Pre-Concert Lecture 6:30 pm The sacred music of Renaissance Spain reached extraordinary heights in the works of Francisco Guerrero and Alonso Lobo. Guerrero, celebrated throughout Europe for his expressive melodies and luminous vocal writing, combined technical mastery with a deeply human sense of devotion. His music reflects the spiritual fervor and artistic richness of Spain's Golden Age. A generation younger, Alonso Lobo inherited Guerrero's legacy while developing a distinctive voice of remarkable emotional depth and contrapuntal sophistication. Lobo composed 6 settings of the mass ordinary, five of them based on the motets by Guerrero performed here. Lobo's music balances architectural grandeur with profound spiritual intensity. Together, Guerrero and Lobo represent two of the finest composers of the Spanish Renaissance, creating works of breathtaking beauty that continue to inspire performers and audiences more than four centuries later.
