Orlando di Lasso: Missa Congratulamini & motets Pre-Concert Lecture - 6:30 pm The flourishing musical culture of sixteenth-century Munich owed much to the remarkable partnership between Orlando di Lasso (c. 1532–1594) and Duke Albrecht V of Bavaria (1528–1579). One of the most celebrated composers of the Renaissance, Lasso was renowned throughout Europe for his extraordinary versatility, expressive depth, and mastery of nearly every musical genre of his time. His achievements were made possible in large part by the patronage of Duke Albrecht V, a passionate supporter of the arts who transformed the Bavarian court into one of Europe's leading cultural centers rivalling that of the court of Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II in Vienna. Under Albrecht's leadership, Munich attracted distinguished musicians, artists, and scholars, creating an environment in which Lasso could compose and perform at the highest level. The music in this concert reflects the artistic brilliance of this courtly collaboration—a union of creative genius and enlightened patronage that produced some of the most enduring masterpieces of the Renaissance.
