Music from the English Cloister, Court, & Classroom Pre-Concert Lecture - 6:30 pm From the haunting melodies of medieval England to the soaring splendor of the Eton Choirbook, this program traces the remarkable flowering of English music before the Reformation. Performed by Polyhymnia and Concordian Dawn, it explores a rich musical tradition encompassing sacred devotion, courtly song, and dance, revealing a culture of extraordinary imagination and craftsmanship. The journey begins with the monophonic and early polyphonic repertoires of medieval England and passes through the Cambridge Manuscript and the Old Hall Manuscript. Compiled during the reigns of Henry IV and Henry V, the Old Hall Manuscript preserves works by composers such as Leonel Power and John Dunstaple, whose innovations in harmony and texture helped shape the distinctive sound of English polyphony and influenced musicians across Europe. The program culminates in a selection from the Eton Choirbook, one of the greatest monuments of late medieval music. Compiled around 1500 for Eton College, this extraordinary manuscript preserves large-scale works from the mid to late 15th century of breathtaking richness, featuring elaborate textures, soaring vocal lines, and radiant expressions of faith. Alongside these sacred masterpieces, the concert also highlights the vibrant secular and instrumental traditions that animated England's courts, towns, and countryside. Spanning more than three centuries of musical innovation, this concert offers a rare opportunity to experience the evolution of English musical life—from the refined polyphony of the Lancastrian court to the magnificent choral works that stood at the threshold of the Renaissance.
