GIRAF22 FEATURE: MAGIC ATLAS

In the land of Luocha, the ruling elite govern with an iron-fist, dedicated to stamping out creative expression and enforcing conformity. When a wayward travelling magician stumbles into the empire on the eve of a controversial Dream Festival, his very presence threatens to seed new ideas in the minds of the population.
A surrealistic dream in its own right, director Sun Xun's Magic Atlas is political, allegorical, and mesmerising to watch. Lovingly hand-made over ten years, it's a tribute to human labor and the art and craft of animation, incorporating woodblock printing, traditional Chinese ink, charcoal and other analogue techniques into a cohesive, mystical whole.
