Turning Point Ensemble presents a shimmering program featuring the music of Tōru Takemitsu along with works by composers who have a connection to his oeuvre. At the heart of this concert is Takemitsu’s And then I knew ‘twas wind (1992) paired along with the piece that inspired it, Claude Debussy’s Sonata for Flute, Viola, and Harp (1915). This concert offers a rare opportunity to hear Takemitsu’s mixed quintet Rainspell (1982), as well as his Messiaen-influenced Quatrain II (1977). Demonstrating Takemitsu’s impact on the music of today, this program will also feature the works of Toshio Hosokawa, Vancouver’s Dorothy Chang, and Ramsey Sadaka. Each of these composers engage in some way to the unique approach to music developed by Takemitsu over the course of his career.
